elow you will find three love letters. “Dear You” is a letter to an ex-boyfriend, “Dear Chiara” is a love letter from Chiara for Chiara and “My Dear” is also a letter written by Matthias to himself. I set the task to write a love letter. The participants were free to choose whether to address it to their current love partner, a past love or to themselves.

Dear You,

When we met for the first time I was very young. I was not ready for your love.

After fifteen years I still feel the strong connection to you and still – with a big smile on my face and tears in my eyes – I’m looking back to our time. 

It was summer and autumn and winter and spring and one of the best years of my life. We were so much in the now, having been inspired by each other, always full of surprises. We enjoyed life as if it was our last day to live. I have tears because I hurt you so much, now I understand the pain. Now I am the same age you were then. 

The moment came, I stopped feeling sexually attracted to you. I felt attracted to other men, but not to you. I never again found such a soul partner and playful friend. I’m sorry that the plant that was created through our relation had to die because there was no water to give. Now I would wish to go back in time – but it’s impossible.

Dear Chiara, 

More and more I see that I am learning how to love you and take care of you. About these past years, I apologise for having not been there, I apologise for not nourishing your needs, not listening to your feelings, for not accepting your soul. Your childish feet running always away, your mature legs telling them to stay. I will embrace you for every choice you will make. 

I will marry you again for each and every mistake. With this letter, I pray to you. Now my words, whispering, become the air,  your lungs, blood, your heart.

This morning at school, while making coffee, it occurred to me that you are always very busy with how many social deficits you have. My dear! That is not true at all. You are an extremely likeable, open, warm-hearted and turned towards person with a sunny mind. I really enjoy spending my life with you. I am interested in the questions you ask the world and I find the way you are incredibly exciting. I want to go that way with you. Hand in hand.” (a love letter to me)
